Modern Country Children's Room Tour....

And, again, in this child's bedroom with touches of Modern Country Style, it's the little things that count. I'm talking about...

....wooden crates to hold teddies and books....

...carefully chosen toys...
{though I must confess I've happily never quite cracked getting my children to only pick toys that tie in with their room scheme!!}

...plenty of homespun crafts.....

...co-ordinating white furniture; children's rooms are generally smaller so any hotch-potching of furniture stands out like a sore thumb....

...and those little personal touches....

Whether you're a beginner to getting a nursery or children's rooms together, or a more seasoned pro, I have just the sewing project for you coming up. Time-consuming but easy and so, soooo worth it!

My Real Ruler Height Chart!

It's the small touches, they say, that make the difference....and never has that been more true than in Modern Country Style children's bedrooms.

My tick-list for must-have accessories in my own or my client's homes is pretty demanding. They must look good, perform beautifully, earn their keep (children's bedrooms can often be smaller than average so every square inch counts), stand up to the rigours of little hands, and have that timeless Modern Country look that I love.

I first saw the idea of over-sized rulers as height charts a while back on The Great Interior Design Challenge but it wasn't until I stumbled upon The Real Ruler Height Chart Company, an utterly delgithful, utterly professional company based in rural West Sussex, that I succumbed to temptation.

They make a beautiful feature of measuring ritual, heretowith scribbled on door posts up and down the country! The Height Charts from The Real Ruler Height Chart Company are made from responsibly-sourced Redwood Pine of exceptional quality. Mine has been cut and stained (by hand, I might add) to mimic a vintage school-ruler, although you can also choose from a variety of Farrow and Ball paint options.

Something to look out for when buying one for your own family is to remember to choose a style that has been chamfered on each side for a truly authentic appearance.

The measurements run up each side (feet and inches on one, centimetres on the other) catering for both imperial and metric enthusiasts!

My Height Chart genuinely looks like an old-school ruler, only this one goes up to six foot six!

Get yours here.

Gorgeous Modern Country Style bedroom

I love this Modern Country Style bedroom. It would be perfect for growing boys, too, or to double up as a guest room, don't you think?

Modern Country New Build Home Tour

I'm always so impressed when I stumble upon a new-build with stylishly decorated Modern Country interiors, such as this coastal dream in West Sussex.

Modern Country Style perfectly spans the bridge between the kind of frilly and floral country style that used to only be the domain of the manor house, and the slightly stark contemporary chic that was made for new homes. It can give a softness, a character to brand spanking new homes, which not many other looks can.

Take a look around and see what you think....

Modern Country loves...Union Jack rugs

Sometimes, something so deliciously Modern Country comes along that I simply can't wait to share it with you!

Such a momentous occasion has arisen, my friends.
I ordered this Union Jack rug from Cox and Cox
for the boys bedroom a while back and I am still smitten.

You know how some mail order buys
completely surpass your expectations?
This is one of them.

The picture doesn't do the rug justice.
The colours are much darker and richer and infinitely more Modern Country. The 100% wool tufts feel soft and reassuringly good quality under bare little feet (and bigger mummy feet too!).

The backing is edged beautifully. I love it when gorgeous details are placed where they're not even meant to be seen...you know they're there for just the sheer pleasure of looking good.

If you've been searching for a thoroughly eye-catching
Union Jack rug,
let your search stop here.
Jackpot.

{Edited note: the rug was from Cox and Cox who have stopped this particular rug but still stock the star version, or you can buy a very similar version here}

Union Jack-inspired boys bedroom!

This was the bedroom that got me thinking, I LOVE bedrooms inspired by the colours of the Union Jack flag...and, best of all, incorporating the flag itself....

Are Boys Bedrooms Too Pretty?

The problem I find with many beautifully designed boys bedrooms is that they look, simply put, too pretty. I often help my clients to work through this very issue. You should be looking to strike the balance so that everyone is thrilled with the result!

This room is gorgeous but hanging hearts on the chest of drawers? Beading on the blinds? Really?!!
